INFORMATION

STUDENTS

At Kangaroobie we believe that coming on camp is about a number of different things – learning to live together with other people cooperatively, challenging yourself to try things that you might think are too hard, taking responsibility for yourself and, most importantly, having fun! And don’t forget to bring the right gear!

Rooms – all the rooms at Kangaroobie are bunk rooms. There are six bunks per room and they are all heated and very comfortable. Just remember to keep them tidy for the room inspections by the teachers!

Food – the food at Kangaroobie is great! There is always plenty of it and it is really yummy. Pizza, sausage rolls, baked potatoes, pancakes, desserts … and if your parents ask, you can tell them there’s always fruit available as well!

Activities – the activities at Kangaroobie are awesome, both lots of fun and very different from other camps. Canoeing in the river, running around in the bush, swinging from ropes, feeding the animals or just hanging out with your mates on the beach are just some of the great things you can do here.

Games – ‘Life or Death’ is an exciting game about survival of the fittest. Split into three teams – herbivore, carnivore or disease – those who manage to avoid the enemy & find enough water to survive win. Another game is ‘Scavenger Hunt’ – a game of observation where students have to collect items from around the property.

Farm – get out on the farm and help feed the animals – even get close enough to pat them! Find out all about what the animals are used for and how the farm works.

Obstacle Course – a huge obstacle course that is both challenging and heaps of fun – you’re guaranteed to get wet & muddy, and have the time of your life! Negotiate the Typhoon Tunnel, the Maze of Mystery, the Hurdles of Horror, the Wall of Woe, the Mudpit of Misery and the Tunnel of Love. It’s fantastic!

Beach – starting with an exciting raft crossing of the Gellibrand River, then a hike through the Great Otway National Park & finally fantastic activities like sandcastle competitions, sand dune jumping, beach flags, ball games and general fun.

PARENTS

We want you to feel comfortable about sending your child to Kangaroobie so we have prepared a short summary covering important information about our school camp.

ABOUT KANGAROOBIE

Kangaroobie is situated just off the Great Ocean Road, only five minutes from the Twelve Apostles. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the world and we are immensely proud to be able to offer visitors the chance to be a part of our little piece of paradise. Kangaroobie is a large farming property that has been owned by the Bowker family since the 1860s. The current owners, Matt and Sophie Bowker, are the sixth generation to manage the property and have been doing so for over twenty years.

ACCREDITATION

Kangaroobie was one of the first camps in Australia to become accredited under the auspices of the Australian Camps Association. Accreditation is an exhaustive process that ensures that all aspects of our business, from activities to buildings and staff are presented in a safe and appropriate manner. At all times we endeavour to make sure your children are having lots of fun in a safe environment.

FOOD

The food at Kangaroobie is of an excellent standard. For many years we have been aiming to change people’s perception of ‘camp food’. We provide wholesome, home cooked meals and plenty of it so that visiting children are able to tackle the very full days we throw at them. All of the food is prepared on site, including the cakes and slices, so we are able to keep a very good handle on all of the ingredients that go into our meals. If there are special dietary requirements we are generally able to cater for just about anything. We describe ourselves as a ‘Nut Aware’ kitchen – none of the meals have nut products in them and we cater every week for students with nut allergies. Read more about our food.

ACCOMMODATION

All of the bedrooms at Kangaroobie are dorm style bunkrooms – the traditional ‘camp’ rooms. We believe that an important part of being on camp is sharing rooms with others from the group that the children may not know that well and learning to live with them in a cooperative environment. All rooms are heated and there is aircon available when it gets hot. We ask that you send down a pillow, pillowcase, single sheet and a sleeping bag with your child.

TEACHERS

At Kangaroobie we aim to make the planning and execution of the camp as easy as possible for you, the hard working teachers. The information contained in this section provides you with most of the Risk Management and Camp Planning information that you need to make your job easier. If there is any further information you would like or need please contact us and we can arrange it for you.

BUSHFIRE PROCEDURES

While the threat and likelihood of bushfires at Kangaroobie is minimal due to the surrounding terrain, availability of water and minimal surrounding bushland, we take the issue very seriously and the safety of your children is paramount. You can download our Bushfire Response Plan, but in a nutshell, if a Catastrophic day is declared for this area we will either delay the arrival of the group until after the Catastrophic day or evacuate the group back to school on the day before the Catastrophic day. We feel this is the most responsible and sensible course of action we can take to ensure the safety of your children. Any fees not used for the days at camp not attended will be returned to you or we will try to schedule the students to come back at a later date.
